North Monterey County Unified School District

Castroville, CA

This school district contains a large majority of Hispanic students whose families are integral in the agriculture sector that surrounds the school. Gardening electives allow students and families to bring the expertise and knowledge of agriculture to the schools and deepen their knowledge of how to care for plants. This program builds on the knowledge students already contain and possibly encourages them to pursue a career in agriculture.

Produce grown by students goes to local food pantries and churches that help to feed individuals that are homeless. Students are able to take produce home with them and distribute it to friends and family that may be in need as well.
