Students and faculty within the Department of Human Nutrition at Winthrop University operate The Food Box and Community Garden Project in a combined effort to combat food insecurity on campus while providing education about agriculture, sustainability, and nutrition.

The garden currently consists of 8 raised bed gardens and 2 indoor tower gardens, but there are plans for expansion before spring planting. The produce grown in the garden is donated to the Food Box (the Winthrop University's food pantry) for food insecure students and staff. A free farmers market is also hosted weekly on campus as an opportunity to provide free fruits and vegetables for students.
