Patrick County Master Gardeners
Spencer, VA
Patrick County is located in rural Southwest Virginia. One of the goals of the local Master Gardener is to boost food security by creating a public learning garden. Using land at the local soup kitchen, vegetables and herbs were planted in nine raised beds and additional crops in an adjacent plowed area. The produce grown in these gardens is donated to local individuals and organizations in need.
Free monthly workshops at the learning garden are held for the public on topics including soil quality, attracting pollinators, raised bed gardening, composting, and growing garlic.
