Downtown Greens
Downtown Greens uses its Garden Space to teach children different ways to access and utilize crops. In the Youth Garden Club (YGC) children meet weekly to tend their communal, organically grown vegetable patch from seed to harvest. Their Youth Farm Program (YFP) farmers learn how to grow and harvest a variety of vegetables and fruits in their own educational garden, prepare meals from their harvest alongside a guest chef for monthly community dinners, and take monthly trips to the local farmer’s market to learn entrepreneurial skills. After community meals, program participants take home leftover food, ingredients, and a recipe to prepare the meal again. The Garden Sprouts (GS) program works in collaboration with Fredericksburg Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative, which provide early childhood education to low-income and at-risk children. Students receive snacks and have regular tastings of foods from the garden or grocery store to increase their familiarity with new foods.
