Fredericksburg, VA
Downtown Greens (DTG) - is a 2.78 acre greenspace founded in 1995 in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. Downtown Greens’ mission is to foster community involvement and growth by protecting and nurturing urban greenspace through collaborative environmental stewardship and experiential education. They use their garden space to teach children different ways to access and utilize crops. The Garden Sprouts (GS) program works in collaboration with Fredericksburg Head Start and Virginia Preschool Initiative, which provide early childhood education to low-income and at-risk children. Students receive snacks and have regular tastings of foods from the garden or grocery store to increase their familiarity with new foods.
Hampton, VA
Hampton Community Gardens - This community garden program hosted by the city of Hampton, VA has three sites with 93 individual plots, 6 of which are handicapped accessible, 2 oversized plots for the Community Garden Feeds program and 2 hoop houses. A plot is available free for any resident. The Community Garden Feeds program grows food for distribution to residents in need. Last year, they distributed over 150 pounds of fresh produce.
Spencer, VA
Patrick County Master Gardeners - is located in rural Southwest Virginia. One of their goals is to boost food security by creating a public learning garden. Using land at the local soup kitchen, vegetables and herbs were planted in nine raised beds and additional crops in an adjacent plowed area. The produce grown in these gardens is donated to local individuals and organizations in need. Free monthly workshops at the learning garden are held for the public on topics including soil quality, attracting pollinators, raised bed gardening, composting, and growing garlic.
