Giant Leek (Allium porrum) is a fast-growing variety with crisp stems and enormous leaves. Leaves and white stems add a delicious flavor to cooked dishes, with a milder, sweet flavor compared to onions. Standard seed packet contains 500 mg (about 200 seeds). Jumbo packet contains 2.5 g (about 850 seeds).
Known for its consistent size and low maintenance habit, Giant Leeks are a reliable and easy-to-grow crop. With a milder flavor than onions, leeks are fantastic in soups, potato dishes, stir-fries, casseroles and roasted dishes. Large, premium seed packets give instructions on how to grow and when to plant outdoors.
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost or direct sow outdoors once soil temperature reaches 55-65°. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. To develop white stems, plant seedlings 6-8" deep or create a trench and fill in soil or mulch around stems. Keep well-watered, about 1" per week.
