Widely grown speckled bean native to Mexico and Central American. Popularly used to make refried beans or in soups and stews. Dry beans store well and have a long shelf life.
Sow directly outside 1-2 weeks after last frost, when soil has warmed to 65° or more. Improve germination by soaking seeds overnight prior to planting. Plant in sunny location with well-draining soil, spacing seeds out 2-4" apart. Cover well to ensure good soil to seed contact. Can be harvested early as a green bean or left for beans to dry out prior to harvesting.
