Yes it is possible, but it is recommended to sow directly in the ground.
Most sunflowers that grow in pots are dwarf varieties unlike mammoth sunflowers, which can grow 8-12 feet tall. Because of their massive size, mammoth sunflowers would need pots at least 5 gallons in size. Growing conditions aren’t optimal in a container so the plant may not reach its full potential in height, but it will still grow.
Mammoth sunflowers are an annual, so the plant will not grow back the following season.
If the seed heads are left on the plant, it may self seed over the winter to grow other plants the next spring. Seeds can also be harvested and used to grow more sunflowers during later growing seasons.
Yes, mammoth sunflower seeds can be eaten raw or roasted.
Soaking them in salt water before roasting gives them a nice salty taste. Roast the seeds for 10 minutes at 400ºF if soaked. Roast at 320ºF for 5 minutes if they haven't been soaked.
Mammoth sunflower seeds are striped black and gray when they are fully matured and ready to harvest. Cut the stalk and place them in a bag. Hang the bag upside down to dry. This drying process can take a couple of weeks.
To get the seeds off the seed head, hold the seed head over a bowl or bucket and rub your hands across the seeds. (You may want to wear gloves) If the seeds don't release easily, they need to dry longer.
