Unleash the full potential of your garden with non-GMO heirloom Charleston Grey Watermelon seeds from Sow Right Seeds. This classic heirloom variety produces bountiful harvests of large, oblong watermelons featuring a light green rind and sweet, brilliant red flesh. Perfect for fresh summer snacking, festive outdoor gatherings, and homegrown fruit salads, Charleston Grey watermelons offer high yields and reliable performance for both novice and seasoned gardeners looking to grow a classic summer treat.

Sow seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach 70°F or warmer. Plant seeds 1/2" deep in rich, well-draining soil in an area that receives full sunlight. Space plants 6 feet apart in rows or hill plantings to allow the vigorous vines ample room to spread. Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing period. Watermelons mature in approximately 85–100 days. Harvest when the tendril closest to the fruit turns brown and dry, and the underside of the melon turns creamy yellow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Charleston Grey variety was specifically bred by the USDA in 1954 for its excellent resistance to Fusarium wilt and Anthracnose, making it an extremely reliable and hardy selection for home gardeners.

Check three main signs: the small curly tendril on the vine nearest the stem should be completely brown and dried up, the light green belly (underside) of the watermelon where it touches the ground should turn a creamy yellowish color, and tapping the melon should produce a dull, hollow sound.

Yes, you can start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before your average last spring frost date. Use biodegradable peat or paper pots, as watermelon roots are sensitive to transplant shock, and plant the whole pot directly into the garden once soil temperatures warm up.

Because Charleston Grey produces large, vigorous vines and giant fruit, each hill or plant needs about 6 feet of space in all directions. If space is limited, you can train vines along a strong trellis or plant them at the edge of your garden bed so the vines can spread into surrounding areas.
