Golden Midget is a cute little watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) with golden rind and salmon-colored flesh. Round fruits weigh in at 3-5 pounds apiece, perfect for storing in the icebox and taking on picnics. At only 70 days to maturity, Golden Midget is a good choice for cooler climates with fewer hot days. Seed packet contains 2 G (about 40 seeds).
This variety, and all other watermelons love heat, the hotter the better. If you live in a cooler climate, start seeds indoors early and transplant to the hottest spot in your yard. Sow directly into fertile soil that's at least 70°F. For a head start in cooler climates, start indoors 2-4 weeks before transplanting out. Do not disturb tender roots when transplanting. Thin down to 2-3 plants per hill. Keep soil moist but well-drained. Allow plenty of room for vines to spread.
